David Squires picks his favourite cartoons of 2025

“Denis Law is one of the few footballers I’m too young to have seen play live, but like all followers of the game, I’m aware of his impact and talent. What I hadn’t fully appreciated was what a kind and generous person he was – something that became obvious as I read the many tributes to his character, in preparation for this cartoon”.

“The outburst of emotion that followed Crystal Palace’s brilliant FA Cup final win against Manchester City, was one of the highlights of 2025, and almost made me forgive them for beating Swindon Town in the 1989 playoff semi-final. Almost.”

“England’s run to the Women’s Euros final did little to lower my stress levels, but did deliver loads of moments perfect for cartoon adaptation, some of which I managed to squeeze into this cartoon. This one was drawn straight after the final, which may explain why some of the lines are a bit wobbly”.

“Thomas Tuchel is one of my favourite people to draw and he often goes above and beyond the call of duty to provide cartoon content. His observation about Wembley being a bit quiet during a 3-0 stroll against Wales gave me something to work with in a pretty slow international week. Whatever happens at the World Cup, I hope Tactics Tommy gets a 10-year contract extension”.

“For a while, I haven’t known where to put my disgust and anger at Fifa’s entwinement with the Maga movement, so I put it here. There wasn’t enough room for all the ghouls, but this will do for starters.”
