Bowls Here’s a report from the Press Association on the remarkable Louise Hoskins, who became the oldest gold medalist in Commonwealth Games history.
A remarkable final delivery from her para bowls playing partner has secured Commonwealth Games gold for Australia’s oldest athlete in Glasgow.
Down 4-1 in the second set, Louise Hoskins and Serena Bonnell were headed for the lottery of a sudden-death tiebreaker with New Zealand in their women’s pairs B6-B8 showdown.
A sprinkle of magic dust from Bonnell was the difference, as she nudged the jack and delivered three points to Australia to tie the set and secure a 6-3 4-4 win.
“It is incredible. I’m still pinching myself,” said 76-year-old Hoskins, who was born during the 1950 Auckland Empire Games. “I never thought I’d ever get (a gold medal) at my age. Get out there and have a go, and never give up.”
Kiwi pair Julie O’Connell and Teri Blackbourn were world champions in 2023 and opened their Glasgow campaign with victory over Australia, dropping just one match en route to the final.
But Bonnell had a feeling she and Hoskins would be able to turn the tables with gold on the line.
The 44-year-old, who won silver in Birmingham four years ago, needed some words of wisdom from the sidelines before holding her nerve when it mattered most.
“I had good weight on my first, crap line on my second and my coach took a time out,” Bonnell said. “She settled me down, supported me and that was enough for me to play the bowl and win the game.
“I have been dreaming and visualising the fact that I was going to have to play big bowls and Louise led exceptionally well. Thankfully I was able to play the bowl when I needed to.”
Hoskins was the contest’s dominant figure and was delighted for her partner to play the match-winning bowl. “The moment Serena released it I could see she had it,” Hoskins said. “It was amazing and just heading for the jack. You could see it. I knew it was there before it even came through.”
Asked how she planned to celebrate, Hoskins noted Bonnell still owed her a few drinks. What will it be then?
“Whatever Serena’s going to give me,” Hoskins laughed.
Netball We’re a few minutes away from the final between New Zealand and Jamaica.
New Zealand have won gold on two occasions, in 2006 and 2010. Jamaica, who lost to Australia in the final four years ago, are hoping to make history: they have never won netball gold at the Commonwealth Games.

Leigh Hoffman wins cycling gold
Men’s 1000 time trial final England’s Joe Truman runs Leigh Hoffman close, taking silver in 59.525. That means Australia’s Tatye Ryan (59.684) is relegated to bronze.

Netball The gold medal match between Jamaica and New Zealand kicks off in just over an hour, at 1pm local time. In case you missed it, Jamaica stunned the reigning champions Australia in yesterday’s semi-final.
76-year-old Hoskins wins gold!
Bowls Australia have beaten New Zealand 1.5-0.5 in the para women’s pairs B6-B8 gold medal match. Louise Hoskins and Serena Bonnell took the first set 1-0 before drawing the second to seal victory.
At the age of 76 years, 173 days, Hoskins becomes the Commonwealth Games’ oldest gold medalist. The previous record holder was George Miller, who was 75 when he took bowls gold four years ago.
Malaysia took bronze from Scotland with a 2-0 victory.
Cycling Harry Ledingham-Horn leads the men’s 1000m time trial final in a time of 1:00.039. The great Mohd Azizulhasni Awang is in second on 1:01.357.

Cycling The men’s 1000m time trial final is up and pedalling in the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome. Cole Dempster of Canada currently has the fastest time: 1:02.169.

Australia delivered an unprecedented podium sweep in the women’s mile on the final day of athletics competition at the Commonwealth Games, after Abbey Caldwell upset Jessica Hull to secure one of seven track and field gold medals including a breakthrough victory for Lachie Kennedy’s 4x100m relay team.
The haul exceeds the six gold medals from one day in Auckland in 1950, when Marjorie Jackson and Shirley Strickland were among the winners, to make it Australia’s most successful track and field day at the Commonwealth Games.
Judo: women’s +78kg Huge disappointment for Scotland’s Sarah Adlington, who was beaten by Marie Loanne Durhone in the round of 16.
Adlington, who won Commonwealth Games gold in 2014 and 2022, was in tears after the bout and during a later interview on TNT Sports.
I can’t thank [enough] the people who have been in my corner during the highs and the lows of the past 22 years. It didn’t finish the way I wanted today, but I’m proud of what I’ve achieved. I was a flag-bearer for Team Scotland.
[Apart from] stepping away with a medal today, and hearing Flower of Scotland, what more could you ask for, really? To get a standing ovation from a home crowd shows that people appreciate what I’ve done for the sport.
To be an ambassador for Scottish sport, for women and young girls… to show them it doesn’t matter what shape or size you are: big, small, tall, I guess chunky. There’s a place in sport for you. If you’re watching this, and you’re questioning yourself, do it. Just go out there and do it.

McKeown and Kelly win bowls gold!
The Northern Ireland pair of Adam McKeown and Gary Kelly have beaten England’s Nick Brett and Jamie Walker in the men’s pairs gold medal match. Amirul Danial Abdul Rahim and Mohammad Soufi Rusli of Malaysia beat Canada to bronze.
Australia beat England to netball bronze
It’s not the medal Australia wanted, but a 68-50 victory over England means they will take bronze in the netball. There were no signs of a hangover from yesterday’s shock defeat to Jamaica.

Josh Kerr’s summer of miracle and wonder continued in front of his adoring home fans as he added Commonwealth gold to his glittering collection.
In a slowly run race that frequently resembled dodgems, Kerr made a devastating kick for home with 250 metres remaining to eviscerate a high-quality field and take the title in 3:54.12.
Some had feared that Kerr might have an emotional hangover after shattering the mile world record a fortnight ago. Others believed he might be vulnerable in a last-lap sprint. So much for all that. He destroyed them all.
In fact, the 28-year-old Scot was so far in front before the end he even had time to smile and gesture excitedly to those roaring him on in the main stand.

“I couldn’t switch off because it’s been a real rollercoaster of a week,” Adam Ramsay-Peaty says with a weary smile on a quiet Thursday morning in Glasgow. He has just endured a rough night in which, after winning his third medal of the Commonwealth Games, he managed less than three hours of sleep. The medals consist of bronze in the 100m and 50m breaststroke and a silver in the men’s 4x100m medley. For most swimmers this would constitute success and satisfaction, but Ramsay-Peaty is different.
The fact that none of his three medals are gold, or attached to anything remotely like the kind of supreme performance that Ramsay-Peaty churned out with an aura of invincibility for eight years, has taken a chunk out of the double Olympic champion. There have been tears of frustration and an admission that “nothing makes sense this week”.
Ramsay-Peaty also sent out a fiery message to his tormentors in the tabloid press, and on social media, to stress that “you can’t hurt me” before urging an end to the excessive intrusion into his private life: “It has to stop. How many athletes have to go through this until the media learn their lesson?”
Day nine at the Games
Preamble
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the final day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The city is still high on Josh Kerr’s glorious victory last night, and for the spectator, today has the feel of a slow, steady comedown. There are still 15 gold medals up for grabs, including the netball final between New Zealand and Jamaica and several cycling events.
For now our focus is on netball bronze, which is heading Australia’s way. They lead England 49-36 at the end of the third quarter.
