Key events
The groundstaff unroll the mustard covers at the Racecourse ground, and hammer them in. Wickets galore on this second day back, with some games sprinting to the line. We’ll be back tomorrow to cover them all. Have a lovely evening. Bye!

With wickets tumbling round the grounds, time for me to write up for second edition.
TRJ cambers in, Zak Crawley drives, Cracknell collects. Kent 0-1.
Matt Milnes has finished with five wickets, and Matt Quinn four, as Middlesex are all out for 249. Bosch, TRJ and Helm adding more than helpful tailend runs.
A wicket for Sonny Baker at Southampton, Whiteman getting (I think) an inside edge onto the stumps, but Yorkshire making a better fist of their second innings, 106 for two.
Stokes back on
And that’s goodbye Wayne Madsen, plucked by second slip in front of first, for 28 off Will Rhodes. Derbyshire 89 for three, and Ben Stokes is back on the field.
Essex follow-on (311 behind)
And have safely negotiated the first 2.4 overs…
Stokes injured
Every time I look up, a Derybshire batsman is playing and missing at Brydon Carse. The two wickets to fall since tea went to Ben Stokes – items here and here. but Stokes is currently off the field after hurting something on the left side of his body.
And Essex have disintegrated. All out for 158, four for Leach, three for Gregory, two for Vaughan. Critchley (50), Walter (48) and Pepper (35) the only men to make more than ten.
The verdict seems to be that Derbyshire’s 52 for 2 could be worse, as Carse bounds in, all liquid arms and muscle memory.

Time for me to write up for early Friday edition, will be back in an hour or so. Do keep chatting BTL.
Five wickets for George Hill
In the skittles competition at Southampton. Though the tail have nudged Hampshire to a 17-run lead over Yorkshire. Prest the highest scorer with 46.
No they can’t. Callum Parkinson hoikes with freedom and is caught behind off Dal. They will take tea, Durham 283-10, with 48 over left to be play today.
Five wickets for Ben Aitchison
A 19-ball duck for Potts as Aitchison picks up wicket number five with a ball that shimmies low. Can Durham collect a second batting point?
Yikes, it’s nearly all over at Headingley. If you’ve got tickets for tomorrow, come to Derby instead and watch Stokes, Potts, Carse and Olivier running in.
Carse undone, caught behind going for the pull four balls later. Durham 281-8.
Surrey limp past 130 eight down, Clark the latest man to go, lbw Pennington 4. Here at Derby, Carse has a huge heave ho and picks up four down the ground off Randell.
Ben Aitchison bowls Ollie Robinson and collects his fourth wicket, preserving his place at the top of the Div 2 wicket-takers table.Durham 274-7.
Helter-skelter, 12 wickets have fallen today at Edgbaston, Warwicks 85-5 still 71 behind Sussex. How much do we look at the drought? This is what three groundsmen, including Warwickshire’s Gary Barwell, had to say earlier this week.
And continued…”There’ve been a few that have hit the glove today. Crane the latest getting attention after being hit. That might concern the Umpires more than the lateral movement that’s been there both days.”
From the frenzy of the Grace Road scorebox, Mike Daniels has replied. “Too much going on to email! Ben Mike the big surprise getting three wickets and now Holland’s got his second, 55-6!”
The new ball does the trick, a third for Aitchison, as Clark shoots to Jewell at second slip. Durham 261-6.
Mike Daniels, what is going on at Grace Road? Glamorgan 51-5.
Five wickets for Olly Stone
Perhaps seventh place wasn’t such an anomaly after all. Surrey 118-6. Stone, who has drifted out of conversations recently, red hot.
Forget the table, Leicestershire have Glamorgan where they want them, 33 for three, Tribe, ul Hassan and Kiran Carlson all gone. A wicket each for Holland, Mike and Hull.
Essex first had to watch Somerset pile up 469, with a particularly irritating 48 for No. 11 Pretorius. They then lunched, and are now 1 for two. (both to Gregory)
Kate Cross retires
The end of an era as Kate Cross announces her retirement from professional cricket. She made her Lancs debut as a 13-year-old in 2005, and a year later, became the first woman to join Lancashire’s Academy,
She has taken 239 wickets for all Lancashire teams, and 140 for England, making her debut in October 2013, spanning the amateur and professional eras, an ultra-reliable, metronomic, talented cricketer.
“Winning two trophies with Lancashire in 2025 was really special and will always be one of the highlights of my career.” she said. “To do that in a Lancashire shirt, having been part of the Club for so many years, meant a huge amount to me.
“Retiring hasn’t been an easy decision, but it feels like the right time. I’m excited to see what comes next, and I hope to stay involved in the game I love. Before that though, I look forward to playing out the rest of the season with Lancashire as we look to challenge for more silverware.”
A treat to meet Mavis the long-haired vizsla and Pooch the basset hound at lunchtime, as well as watch tennis ball cricket games all over the field. No oyster catchers today but there were some last week, and a buzzard flew by this morning.
