The prediction Carlos Moya made about Novak Djokovic almost 20 years ago which was proven totally correct

Novak Djokovic has continued to defy the odds throughout his decorated career on the ATP Tour.

Djokovic is a 24-time major winner, having won more Grand Slam titles than any other men’s singles player in history.

However, it has been more of a struggle for Djokovic recently, with the Serbian losing back-to-back matches on clay in both Monte Carlo and Madrid.

At 37 years old, it is something that Djokovic is coming to terms with, but in 2007 he was a young prospect hoping to disrupt the dominance of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

The prediction Carlos Moya made about Novak Djokovic almost 20 years ago

At the 2007 US Open, Djokovic was just 20 years old and had just reached back-to-back semi-finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Djokovic had the opportunity to reach another Grand Slam semi-final that year, which would be his first at the US Open.

Carlos Moya was the opponent who would stand in the way of Djokovic, the Spaniard who had actually beaten him at the Cincinnati Masters just weeks prior.

However, on this occasion third seed Djokovic was able to beat Moya, 6-4 7-6(7) 6-1, to book his place in the semi-finals of the US Open.

Despite the disappointment of his defeat, after the match Moya was full of praise for Djokovic and suggested that he could be the one to challenge Federer and Nadal, who had won the last 10 major tournaments at the time.

“I think if there’s one player who can be compared to Rafa and Roger it’s him,” Moya told press.

Moya continued, “I think he does everything. He has very a good serve, great return. He can attack the ball. He defends very well. I would say the best is when he has to raise his game, he does.

“When he’s in a difficult situation is when he’s playing his best. That only happens when you’re a big champion, and I think he’s going to be.”

Djokovic would reach his first Grand Slam final at the US Open that year, losing out to the aforementioned Federer, but that was just the start for him.

Novak Djokovic’s head-to-head vs Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer

Djokovic has gone on to take the Grand Slams by storm since then, and actually won his first at the following major, the 2008 Australian Open.

Since then he has overtaken both of his now-retired rivals with 24 Grand Slam titles, and is still hoping to add more to his trophy cabinet.

Not only does Djokovic have more major titles than both Nadal and Federer, but he also has a winning head-to-head against them.

After the 2007 US Open both Nadal and Federer had a healthy lead in their head-to-head over Djokovic, but he managed to turn that around against both players.

Although it is currently unclear as to how much longer Djokovic will keep playing for, what is evident is how much of a goal Grand Slam titles still are for him.

Djokovic will next have the opportunity to win a historic 25th major at Roland Garros, that begins on Sunday, May 25.
