Tennis fans left ‘shocked’ after Wimbledon announce wildcards with one big omission

Fans are preparing for tennis’ most prestigious tournament – the Wimbledon Championships.

The British-based Grand Slam will bring the curtain down on the short but exciting and unpredictable grass court season.

With less than two weeks before the action at the Wimbledon Championships commences, the players who will be given wildcards have now been revealed.

To the surprise of many, there is one name missing from the list and fans have made their feelings known.

Fans are surprised that Lois Boisson has not been given Wimbledon wildcard

Of the eight women who were given wildcards to enter the Wimbledon finals draw, only one was non-British.

That is Petra Kvitova, who is a two-time champion at SW19 and will make her first appearance at the tournament since 2023.

The only non-British player not to receive a wildcard for the ladies singles qualifying round is Slovakia’s Renata Jamrichova, who is just 17 years of age.

Many expected Lois Boisson, who reached the French Open semi-finals on her Grand Slam main draw debut to receive a wildcard, but this was not the case.

Fans voiced their confusion with the decision as one said via X: “I’m genuinely shocked Loïs Boisson was denied a Wimbledon wild card…I hope she makes it through the qualifiers. Another user said: “But it’s disappointing there isn’t one for Lois Boisson.

“Now inside the top 70 after Roland Garros – it would have been good to see her in the Main Draw. I hope she comes through qualifying.” Another frustrated fan said: “Quite embarrassing that you/ALTEC declined to give Lois Boisson a wild card.”

Possible reasons why Lois Boisson did not receive Wimbledon wildcard

Boisson set the French Open alight with her courageous performances against the world’s best.

The 22-year-old defeated three seeded players, including top 10 players Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva, on the way to last to the last four in Paris.

Coco Gauff ended the dream run, but this was an exceptional campaign for Boisson who was playing in the main draw at a major for the first time.

However, she has yet to play a professional match on grass and therefore has not previously competed at Wimbledon.

Her lack of experience may explain why she did not receive a wildcard, in addition to Wimbledon choosing to prioritise British players for the special entry into the tournament.

Boisson will be able to enter the qualifying tournament to earn a spot in the Wimbledon main draw and it remains to be seen if she will be successful.
