Novak Djokovic says what is ‘beautiful to see’ about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner ahead of Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic says what is ‘beautiful to see’ about Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner ahead of Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic is aiming for the history books at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, as he hunts down various records set by tennis legends.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion is attempting to equal Roger Federer’s eight Wimbledon titles, while also winning a 25th Grand Slam title, which would move him one clear of Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24.

Djokovic has been preparing well for this year’s Championships, having recently practiced on Centre Court with Carlos Alcaraz.

The Serbian star is in the twilight of his career, and two new faces have emerged as the new ATP Tour powerhouses – Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.

The Spaniard and Italian stars recently contested a marathon five-set French Open final, which Alcaraz won after saving three match points.

Djokovic has weighed in on the pair, discussing Sinner’s post-match speech and their blossoming rivalry.

Novak Djokovic says the Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s rivalry is ‘beautiful to see’

Speaking in a press conference ahead of his Wimbledon first-round match, Djokovic noted that Sinner could have been ‘very bitter’ after losing the French Open, but that he was ‘gracious.’

Djokovic said: “If you see Sinner and Alcaraz, five-and-a-half-hours and Sinner could be very bitter dropping three match points and dropping that match.

“But he was gracious in his speech. He came back and played a good tournament the week after.”

“He’s here, he’s moving on. I think it sends the right message also – their rivalry and the way they respect each other. I think it’s beautiful to see.”

Sinner was winning by two sets to one over Alcaraz in the final of the French Open. In the fourth set, the Italian had three match points at 0-40 on the Alcaraz serve.

However, Sinner was unable to convert any of these points and lost in a final set tiebreak to the Spaniard.

If Sinner had won, he would have equalled Alcaraz’s four Grand Slam titles. However, the result meant Alcaraz increased his Grand Slam total to five, while Sinner remained on three.

Meanwhile, Djokovic was beaten by Sinner in the French Open semi-finals, losing 4-6 5-7 6-7.

Novak Djokovic’s seven Wimbledon titles – who he beat in each final

Novak Djokovic’s best surface is arguably grass, and it is easy to understand this argument when considering his Wimbledon record.

His seven Wimbledon men’s singles titles are only beaten by Swiss great Roger Federer. He has beaten a number of high-profile players during his seven triumphs, including the likes of Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.

Perhaps his most iconic title came in 2019, when he beat Roger Federer in a final set tiebreak, despite being down two match points on the Federer serve at an earlier point in the match.

The Serbian player will be hoping to overcome Carlos Alcaraz if they meet again in the final this year. Djokovic has lost to the Spaniard in the last two Wimbledon finals.
