Pat Cash tells Cameron Norrie what he’ll need to do against Carlos Alcaraz to stand a chance of beating him at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz is into yet another Wimbledon quarter-final, having done so at the expense of Andrey Rublev last night.

Losing the first set, where the Russian played remarkably well, many might have feared for the world number two.

After all, he had lost at least one set in every match he had played at the Championships this year, with none of his opponents boasting the firepower that Rublev does.

Unsurprisingly though, Alcaraz managed to turn things around, setting up a clash with Cam Norrie for a spot in the semi-finals.

The former British number one will need all the help he can get. As such, Pat Cash has given his thoughts on his chances.

Chatting on the BBC immediately after Carlos Alcaraz’s win over Rublev, Cash sought to provide some advice to Norrie.

After all, he has the small task of trying to topple the Spaniard next in the quarter-finals; a task that nobody has managed in the last two years, as he has claimed both titles.

The Australian, who also won Wimbledon in 1987, suggested: ‘It’s a tough one. He has got to serve well. He’s got the left-handed serve. He mixes up the play well. He brings something different, Cam Norrie. He has a very flat backhand, he hits a heavy top-spin forehand.

‘It’s a bit different. That’s why he troubles players on the grass courts and throughout the world. But you have got to hold your own side of the court and at least challenge Alcaraz.

‘And what we have noticed today and against Struff and Fognini is that they have all taken the ball early inside the baseline on second serve and during the rallies.

‘That has put a lot of pressure on Alcaraz. Once he gets you moving, you are in big trouble. Forget about it, you are going to lose.

‘You are going to have to come up early and Cam does that. He can take the ball around the baseline or just slightly behind it, and even jump in and push the opponent around so he is going to have to do that really well, serve really well, volley really well and he is going to have to do it over five sets. It’s a big ask and he has to recover really well. But he has a sneaky game, Norrie.’

Who has Cam Norrie beaten to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals?

Norrie’s run to this stage has been far from easy, and with Alcaraz next up, it’s only increasing in difficulty.

But, if you are going to go deep at any Grand Slam, particularly as an unseeded player, that is the expectation.

The former British number one kicked off his campaign against a really tricky first-round opponent, yet dispatched an in-form Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets.

Next came the real first test: Frances Tiafoe.

And yet, despite falling a set behind, Norrie rallied to win the next three and knock out yet another seed.

His third-round win was far more routine, sweeping aside Mattia Bellucci in straight sets before he seemed on track to do the same against Nicolas Jarry.

As we know, that did not turn out to be the case, as the Chilean rallied back to take the match to a deciding fifth set, which Norrie won.

Such a victory will have tasted even sweeter given how Jarry complained to the umpire about his conduct. He will not care how he is perceived by those whom he beats, as he is now the one set to face Alcaraz in the quarter-finals.
