Patrick Dangerfield’s goal on the siren after a free kick narrowed the margin, just one point separating the two teams.
The opening quarter was intriguing with Geelong cleaner and finding more open space inside 50 at the start, before Carlton reversed the roles at the back end of the quarter. Carlton lost Zac Williams to injury and Tom Stewart is hobbling – a fact in keeping with the tightness of the contest.
Geelong missed opportunities when they fumbled inside 50, while Carlton’s Charlie Curnow let a kick from Patrick Cripps go when he could have marked it and watched it hit the post.
The Blues have won the territory battle (leading clearances 16-7) and the Cats are down, clearly missing Gryan Miers but their scope to improve is high
