Alex de Minaur reveals he’s sent a ‘really good case’ to the US Open to get a mixed doubles wildcard with Katie Boulter

Alex de Minaur reveals he’s sent a ‘really good case’ to the US Open to get a mixed doubles wildcard with Katie Boulter

Alex de Minaur may be once again making his way through a tournament draw, but his focus still seems to keep drifting towards the US Open.

After all, despite winning the Washington Open title last month, and having now reached the quarter-finals of the Canadian Open, his post-match press conference saw him almost instantly send out another message to the final Grand Slam of the year.

Ironically enough, his plea does not even concern his participation in the singles draw, of which he will be guaranteed a spot given his ranking.

Instead, it is the new mixed doubles format which he is desperate to get both himself and Katie Boulter admitted into.

He has now revealed the ‘really good case’ he has once again put forward to the US Open.

Alex de Minaur makes yet another plea to the US Open

Speaking to the Canadian Open press, they were keen to once again get the Australian’s thoughts on his omission from the event.

After all, De Minaur has asked the US Open for a mixed doubles wild card multiple times now, yet continues to be snubbed.

He has not lost hope yet though, convinced that both he and Boulter would be a fine addition.

Given they are engaged, it would be expected that they would at least boast a little more chemistry than some of the other manufactured partnerships.

He would say as much, stating: “Yeah, a hundred percent. I mean, look, I think we’re doing our best to put a really good case forward to hopefully get that wild card. Yeah, I mean, one of the most enjoyable moments I’ve had on a tennis court was playing Wimbledon mixed doubles with her.

“As I said, it was pretty damn cool, so I would love to go back and, yeah, play again. And to play such an exciting event with the world’s best tennis players would be pretty cool. So hopefully they give us a chance to do that, and I don’t know, I mean, yeah, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.”

Alex de Minaur and Katie Boulter deserve a spot in the US Open mixed doubles event

When comparing Alex de Minaur and Boulter’s potential doubles partnership to the others that have been selected, it is understandable why he would feel so aggrieved to have been omitted.

After all, Jannik Sinner admitted to having never had a conversation with Emma Navarro before their union, marking a strange decision to allow them to play together.

Elsewhere, the fact that Paula Badosa and Jack Draper are now playing together despite both having had different partners when the event was first announced should raise alarm bells too.

There are just two wild cards remaining for this draw, and De Minaur will be desperate to grab one.

Hopefully, his last-gasp case will be enough to convince the organisers at the US Open to make the smart decision.
