Cam Norrie explains exactly what was going through his head during match point before beating Daniil Medvedev at Roland Garros

Cameron Norrie is into the second round of the French Open, having shown remarkable spirit to beat Daniil Medvedev.

Racing into a two-set lead, it seemed like the match was already a foregone conclusion for the 29-year-old.

The Russian just could not live with his intelligent play style and powerful groundstrokes, even if Robson criticised Norrie’s predictability earlier this week.

However, her comments very nearly came home to roost though as Medvedev fought back, winning the third and fourth sets and going up a break in the fifth.

Yet somehow, Cam Norrie won, breaking back, holding serve and then breaking again to celebrate his first-round win.

Ushered over for his on-court interview, despite having just finished a gruelling five-set match, he still looked full of energy.

And with good reason given the manner of his triumph, as Norrie claimed: ‘Not a lot to be honest [was going through his head during match point]. It was an incredible atmosphere, thank you to everyone for supporting me there.

‘I really felt like I had the momentum there, it was similar to the first set and I just felt a lot of energy. I managed to get over the line, I think he was a little bit tentative.

‘Honestly, it was a crazy match. He’s so tough to beat. I think I deserve a diploma for beating Medvedev, he’s got me the last three or four times. Unreal match.’

Then asked about what went wrong in those fourth and fifth sets, he admitted: ’Yeah he raised his level and I actually dropped my intensity. I was not able to hang with him, but I was able to find some energy in the fifth set and I was just moving really well.

‘I don’t really remember too much, being 5-4 down and suddenly winning the match is crazy. It was an amazing atmosphere. I really enjoyed the match, start to finish. Incredible tennis from both but an amazing win for me. So much fun.’

Could there be an all-British Roland Garros clash in round three?

Although there are still wins to be had, there is now a very real possibility that we could see an all-British showdown in round three of the French Open draw.

After all, following Norrie’s win today, and Jacob Fearnley’s yesterday, they are both just one victory away from setting up that clash.

The former will be far more favoured to reach that stage too, given he now faces Facundo Diaz, a qualifier, in the second round.

Meanwhile, Fearnley, who dumped out Stan Wawrinka in the opening round, has the tricky task of bypassing Frenchman Ugo Humbert in his own backyard.

It will be tough, but entirely possible that Norrie and Fearnley could fight for a spot in the fourth round of Roland Garros very soon.
