Cameron Norrie reveals what Nicolas Jarry said to him in tense exchange at the end of their fiery match at Wimbledon

Cam Norrie is into his second-ever Wimbledon quarter-final, having fought off a Nicolas Jarry comeback to secure the victory.

Soaring into a two-set lead, it seemed that the last remaining Brit would be cruising into the next round.

However, the towering 29-year-old was never going to make it easy for him, conjuring up similar emotions to his opening-round result which saw him come back from two sets to love down to beat Holger Rune.

Jarry won the next two sets, but it was Cam Norrie who held his nerve to grab the crucial break in the decider.

The match was further marred, or enhanced depending on who you ask, by a mid-match controversy.

Jarry complained to the umpire about Norrie for what he felt was disrupting the match. He then approached the former British number one after it was all over to continue his rant.

It was a tense affair throughout, and naturally Annabel Croft, the on-court interviewer, had to ask about it.

She particularly honed in on their conversation at the net and just before Jarry left the court, which left some sections of the crowd booing the Chilean.

In the end, the two shook hands and Norrie took to the microphone, where he claimed: ‘I think he said I was a little bit vocal, that’s my energy. I just said you competed so well and hung in there so well, it was amazing and a competitive match and I loved the Chilean fans too. You guys really pulled me through the match at the end there.’

Norrie spoke about the Wimbledon atmosphere before the match and how it fuels his success. Now, it seems even his opposition are pushing him on to greatness.

Cam Norrie praises Nicolas Jarry’s performance

Norrie, despite clearly being a figure of frustration to many of his opponents, was magnanimous in his victory.

He even took time to praise Jarry, as he responded when asked how he managed to keep his level so high: ‘Honestly, I don’t know. Credit to Nico, he did an unbelievable job staying with me and he played better than me in both tie breaks.

‘I did not want to let his game style bother me; I just wanted to keep fighting.

‘I forgot to get my coach a birthday present as it’s his birthday today so I had to get him something, so I got him the win.’

Norrie will now face the winner of Carlos Alcaraz’s match with Andrey Rublev for a chance to match his best-ever run at Wimbledon.
