Coco Gauff has surpassed Serena Williams in landmark Masters 1000 stat after reaching Cincinnati Open quarter-finals

Coco Gauff is one of the biggest names in tennis right now, as the top-ranked American and a two-time Grand Slam champion.

2025 has been yet another impressive year for the 21-year-old, despite having just one title to her name.

Fortunately, that came at the French Open, avenging her loss from the final just three years earlier.

Battling forehand mistakes and a serving crisis, it’s been so impressive to see this young superstar continue to charge ahead despite these outstanding issues. Should she solve them, the WTA might soon enter a period of Coco Gauff-led domination.

This week in particular has seen her recapture some of that form and consistency that saw her rise up the rankings, and in reaching the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals, she has even surpassed Serena Williams on a really impressive list.

Coco Gauff smashes landmark with latest Cincinnati Open win

To surpass a player as legendary as the 23-time Grand Slam champion at anything deserves praise, but this particular statistic, related to Masters 1000 events, really highlights Gauff’s penchant for the big occasion.

After all, aside from majors, these are the next biggest thing, and she is now third on the list of quarter-finals reached before the age of 22, behind just Martina Hingis and Maria Sharapova.

Two legendary names, it is her effort in usurping Serena that is of particular interest, and sets her up to hopefully follow in those title-winning footsteps that she left.

Gauff is forging her own legacy, but owes so much to the trailblazing career of the 43-year-old.

It’s only right that this youngster be the next in line to slowly shatter her records.

Ahead of their match, Jasmine Paolini has given her honest thoughts on Gauff as a person and a player.

Coco Gauff explains why she’s not playing the US Open mixed doubles

Given that Gauff is one of the biggest names in tennis, arguably rivalling the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, it seems strange that she is not going to be playing in the US Open’s upcoming revamped mixed doubles format.

After all, almost all of the sport’s top players will be in attendance, having been thrown together in some of the strangest doubles combinations.

However, speaking about her omission, Gauff admitted that she would rather her focus be elsewhere in the week before the final Grand Slam of the year.

She claimed: “For me, it was just because I know the free week of the U.S. Open is already packed for me, for sponsor things, and it was just like a whole other thing.

“And I’m very competitive; if I were to lose, I would not be happy… So, I didn’t want to waste mental energy on that.”
