Dan Evans reveals whether he is considering retiring from tennis soon after rankings drop

Dan Evans has endured a tricky past 12 months on the ATP Tour after falling down the rankings.

Evans won only 34% of his matches in the 2024 season, causing the Brit to fall from inside the top 40 to now being at his lowest ranking in seven years.

After dropping down to world number 215, Evans has now had to drop down to the ATP Challenger Tour.

This has raised questions about how long the 34-year-old will continue playing and if retirement could be on the cards.

Dan Evans says if he is considering retiring from tennis soon

The last time that Evans played at Roland Garros was for Andy Murray’s retirement at the Paris Olympic Games.

Evans has now returned to Paris for French Open qualifying, which he has not played in since 2014.

After making a winning start in the French capital, with Evans beating Billy Harris, he spoke to Roland Garros about his current situation.

During this interview, Evans was asked about his future in the sport and whether he is considering retiring.

Despite his recent drop off in form, Evans revealed that he has no plans to step away from tennis.

“I want to try and play as long as I can,” said Evans. “If I’m enjoying it and I’m still getting into these events. There’s not a lot for me at home, my wife travels with me, we have no children yet, so why not?

“I really love tennis, I love watching it, and I live it. I see no reason to quit unless the body stops.”

Dan Evans explains what his goals are for the future

With Evans having no plans to join Murray in retirement anytime soon, the former world number 21 has big plans going forward.

Returning to the top 100 is one of those, which would enable him to gain direct entry into Grand Slam main draws.

While he was pleased with his French Open qualifying victory, Evans claimed that this was just the start for him.

“I’ve always done pretty well consistently in the Grand Slams and I feel like that’s where I want to be now,” explained Evans. “Of course I’ve got bigger goals. Today is a great start, I moved great today and that’s important.”

However, he will need to find some momentum, with Evans only managing one ATP Challenger quarter-final so far this year.

The next goal for Evans will be his second round qualifying match at Roland Garros against world number 311 Frenchman Clement Tabur.
