Daniil Medvedev is through to the next round at the Canadian Open after defeating Czechia’s Dalibor Svrcina.
Medvedev has struggled during the 2025 campaign, picking up only one victory at the three Grand Slam tournaments so far. He was even labelled as a ‘little bit deluded’ after losing in the Wimbledon first round
However, the Russian former world number one is entering into a section of the season where he has previously thrived. The 29-year-old won his only Grand Slam title at the 2021 US Open.

Since his maiden Grand Slam victory, the Russian has struggled to compete with the new superstars of the sport: Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
However, Medvedev has matched one particular landmark also achieved by the two young hotshots.
Daniil Medvedev’s strong performances at Masters 1000 tournaments
Following a disappointing loss to qualifier Corentin Moutet at the Washington Open, Medvedev started the Canadian Open off on the right foot, defeating Dalibor Svrcina 7-6 6-4 on Tuesday evening in Toronto.
As a result, he entered a new conversation with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
As per OptaAce, among players born in the 1990’s, Daniil Medvedev is one of just three players to hold a win rate on hard court at ATP Masters 1000 events of over 70 per cent.
Medvedev has achieved a win percentage of 70.2 per cent at these tournaments. The only other players to achieve this feat are Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
This statistic is even more impressive when considering Medvedev has played more Masters 1000 tournaments than both Alcaraz and Sinner.
The Russian is a six-time ATP Masters 1000 champion, and he will be hoping to add a seventh at the Canadian Open this week.
Medvedev wins despite poor serving performance
Medvedev’s victory against Dalibor Svrcina was far from a vintage performance.
The Russian struggled mightily on his serve, making only 49 per cent of his first serves during the match, while serving five double faults.

The 29-year-old was also broken four times by the Czech player and remarkably won fewer service points than his opponent.
However, Medvedev managed to claw his way to the next round, where he will face defending champion Alexei Popyrin.
