Holger Rune explains why he has a ‘golden’ opportunity presenting itself on the ATP Tour

Holger Rune will be hoping for success at this week’s Washington Open, going into the tournament as the third seed behind Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti.

Rune has been spotted working with eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi, and will be hoping to utilise the American’s expertise during his second round match against Alexandre Muller.

Rune is currently ranked ninth in the world. However, he did not compete at last year’s Washington Open, and will have ample opportunity to overtake Ben Shelton and Lorenzo Musetti if he performs well in DC.

The Dane has had a topsy-turvy first half of 2025 on the ATP Tour, and was recently told he did something ‘immature’ ahead of Wimbledon.

In 2025, he has enjoyed a superb victory over Carlos Alcaraz to win the Barcelona Open, but also suffered a low when losing in the first round of Wimbledon to Nicolas Jarry.

Despite the mixed results, Rune has identified a reason why the latter half of 2025 presents a ‘golden’ opportunity.

Holger Rune says the weeks ahead are the ‘golden swing’ as he eyes a place in Turin

Although the majority of his titles have come on clay – Munich 2022 and 2023, and Barcelona 2025 – Rune has shown immense ability on the hard court surface.

He put the world on notice in 2022, beating Novak Djokovic in stupendous fashion to lift his first Masters 1000 title in Paris.

Therefore, with the majority of ATP tournaments being played on hard courts for the rest of 2025, Rune has a huge opportunity to capitalise.

Speaking to the ATP Tour, Rune said: “I’ve had a little bit of an up-and-down year.

”I’ve had some good weeks, some bad weeks and that’s what I’m trying to change. I’m thankful to be here in Washington to be able to start my US swing earlier to get matches and to get the rhythm and hopefully do some damage.

“I’m already thinking about Turin with the big weeks coming ahead. It’s a golden swing for me in which I don’t have a lot of points to defend.”

Can Rune qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin?

Rune is correct about not needing to defend many points in the latter half of 2025. The Dane has 1410 points to defend from the last five months of 2024.

When deciding who qualifies, the ATP Race to Turin discounts ranking and instead calculates the total number of points a player achieves within the calendar year.

The tournament, which will take place in November 2025, has already seen Carlos Alcaraz qualify following his superb French Open and Queen’s Club victories.

Rune currently sits in 13th place in the race on 1,840 points. However, there are only 370 points between him and eighth-placed Ben Shelton.

If Rune puts in a strong performance during the rest of 2025, he could not only shoot up the ATP rankings, but also give himself a massive chance of qualifying for the ATP Tour Finals.
