Iga Swiatek admits what she’s been doing at Wimbledon every year which she’s ‘not sure’ is actually allowed

Iga Swiatek has won her opening round at Wimbledon, winning 7-5 6-1 against Polina Kudermetova.

The Pole dominated the serving statistics winning 81 per cent of her second serve points while also converting all three of her break-point opportunities.

Swiatek, who recently complained about the WTA schedule, has historically struggled on the Wimbledon grass but showed little sign of a further disappointment during a comprehensive victory.

In her post-match interview, Swiatek was questioned by a shocked interviewer about the number of a certain item in her tennis bag.

Iga Swiatek is questioned about the number of towels in her Wimbledon tennis bag

While being interviewed by the BBC after her victory, Swiatek was asked to explain the number of towels in her tennis bag.

The interviewer said: “How many towels have you just put in your bag? I don’t know how big your closet is at home but there’s about six in there!”

Swiatek responded: “It’s like a topic that no-one ever talks about. Like, we love our towels, you know.

“Yeah, every time I come back from a slam, I think I have like, I don’t know, 10 friends and 10 members of my family wanting towels.

“So sorry guys! Sorry Wimbledon! I don’t know if I’m supposed to do that, though.

“Yeah I mean, no, I mean, I have a lot at home.. I don’t think much more, and if I’m gonna play like 15 more years on tour, I can’t even imagine, I think I’m gonna have to build like another room in my house just for some towels.”

Swiatek will face Caty McNally in the second round after the American beat British player Jodie Burrage 6-3 6-1.

Iga Swiatek holds a new Grand Slam record after Wimbledon first round win

Iga Swiatek continues to break tennis records, even on her least prolific surface.

Since her first Grand Slam main draw appearance in 2019, Iga Swiatek has recorded the most Women’s Singles Grand Slam second rounds appearances.

The five-time Grand Slam champion will be looking to achieve even more during the two weeks at SW19, having never made it past the quarter-final stage.

Her recent form on grass will give her hope, having reached her first grass court final at the Bad Homburg Open in June.
