Jan Choinski pinpoints the Grand Slam he expected to qualify for before his ‘dream run’ at the 2024 US Open

World number 151 Jan Choinski produced a spectacular run to qualify for the 2024 US Open.

The Brit, who recently won the Bunschoten Challenger in the Netherlands, had never qualified for a Grand Slam tournament before August 2024.

However, he stunned his qualifying opponents to make the main draw, defeating Pedro Cachin, 13th seed Valentin Vacherot, and recently retired Maxime Cressy. Choinski lost in the main draw first round to Roberto Carballes Baena in five sets, 2-6 3-6 7-5 7-6 3-6.

The 29-year-old has played at Wimbledon previously. However, this was on a wildcard basis.

Choinski, who is currently competing at the Platzmann Open, spoke about the tournament he expected to qualify for before his 2024 US Open run.

Jan Choinski expected to qualify for the French Open before the US Open

Speaking to Talking Tennis, Choinski described how he had expected to qualify for the French Open before the US Open, due to his results on clay.

Choinski said: “We were always joking that my best results usually come on the clay. So, in terms of that, [the] French Open should be the tournament to qualify and last year I didn’t have the best preparation for the US Open.

“I played Bonn, I played quarter-finals in Bonn. I came to the states a little bit early, practiced a little bit, played an exhibition tournament. I had proper matches, but not like a challenger match or something before that.

“But in those couple of days I just started feeling good on the hard court. My serve was where it wanted to be, and then it just built up from there. I just started into the first match, was little bit so-so, wasn’t really happy with how I played, although I got it over the line.

“And then it just started developing into a dream run for me.”

When Jan Choinski defeated Joao Fonseca

Back in November 2024, Joao Fonseca had not announced himself on the international stage.

The young Brazilian star went on to do so, with Carlos Alcaraz tipping the 18-year-old for big things after a third round run at the Australian Open.

Just two months prior, Jan Choinski defeated the Brazilian prodigy at the Estoril Open. After losing the first set 6-0, Choinski roared back to take the next two 6-1 6-2.

The Brit will be hoping for a similar level of form when attempting to qualify for the US Open for the second consecutive year.
