Martina Navratilova states what her initial reaction was when Conchita Martinez decided to coach Mirra Andreeva

Mirra Andreeva has been one of the standout players of the 2025 tennis season so far.

The 18-year-old has broken into the top 10 and won back-to-back WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Dubai.

The Russian continues to impress and she has now reached the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championships for the first time in her very promising career.

Mirra Andreeva has certainly enjoyed a bright start to her career and her coach Conchita Martinez has played a significant role in her success.

Martina Navratilova was very pleased to hear Conchita Martinez was going to coach Mirra Andreeva

Several years after her successful tennis career in which she became Wimbledon champion in 1994, Martinez transitioned into coaching.

She guided Garbine Muguruza to the Wimbledon title in 2017 and she aims to achieve the same with Mirra Andreeva.

The Spaniard started coaching the teenager in April 2024 and she has already guided her to a French Open semi-final and now the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

Martina Navratilova is a fan of Andreeva and she is very fond of Martinez as her coach, who she played against during her career.

“They have a really fun, easy relationship but Mirra still knows she’s got a lot to learn and she has a ton of respect for Conchita, rightfully so,” Navratilova told BBC Sport.

“And when I saw that Conchita was going to coach her I was like this is a stroke of genius. Muguruza won here when Conchita was coaching her, what time? Yeah. And she’s got a very great tennis mind, was always a great tactician. And, you know, been there done that.

“So when she speaks, Mirra listens, and she takes it all in, and she’s a student of the game, like I said, and I think it’s a great, great partnership that I think they will be here for a while.”

Mirra Andreeva and Conchita Martinez praised their coaching relationship

Both Martinez and Andreeva very much enjoy working together and this is reflected in the 18-year-old’s results over the past year.

31 years after her coach won the Wimbledon title, Andreeva is motivated to emulate her and lift the Venus Rosewater dish herself.

“Bringing in Conchita has definitely helped me improve,” Andreeva told BBC Sport. “It helps she is an ex-player and has been a Wimbledon champion. She shares a lot of her experience and advice with me.”

“Mirra is a very special player and very complete in everything she does – but also improvable. I think she has a lot to learn,” said Martinez, who thinks Andreeva will have a good shot at winning Wimbledon.

“If I won Wimbledon – I was more of a clay-court player – then I think she has a good shot of winning.”
