Nick Kyrgios delivers latest ‘heartbreaking’ injury update after pulling out of Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios has now offered a new injury update, with his last match on tour coming all the way back in March.

There, clearly struggling with another ailment, the 29-year-old battled hard with Karen Khachanov, narrowly losing the opening set on a tiebreak.

However, unwilling to retire despite obvious issues, the second set was a foregone conclusion, with the Russian bagelling Kyrgios.

It’s a sad state of affairs, to see such a talented player held back by matters outside of his control.

He has now provided an update on when we might see him back playing again.

Speaking to talkSPORT, the Australian was quizzed about when he might return to the court, with both Simon Jordan and Jim White keen to see him back playing whenever possible.

But, given that Kyrgios has pulled out of Wimbledon, his favourite event, something serious must be ongoing.

Now offering a brand-new injury update, he claimed: ‘I mean, I had a bit of a knee injury, maybe like 15 days ago. And also, it was heartbreaking because, you know, Wimbledon’s my favourite event, and it’s pretty much all I play for, to be honest, every year, it’s circled in the calendar.

‘So it’s heartbreaking not playing, but even just being around the event and I’m doing a lot of work for the media and doing a lot of exciting things and I still feel like I can give a lot to the game of tennis.

‘Even if I’m not playing, you know, I can analyse it, commentate on it, and I really just enjoy being around it these couple of weeks.’

He later went on to admit that his short-term goal was to play at the US Open, an event which a certain British player will definitely be in contention for given he reached the semi-finals last year.

Kyrgios predicted if Jack Draper could win a Grand Slam earlier this month.

What has happened to Nick Kyrgios?

Once a genuine and consistent threat on the ATP tour, it’s frustrating that these major injuries have only really emerged since arguably his best year on the tour.

In 2022, Kyrgios stunned the world as he soared into the Wimbledon final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic.

He then followed that up by reaching the US Open quarter-finals, marking stunning back-to-back performances at Grand Slam events.

However, a combination of knee, foot and crucially, wrist injuries, have seen him play just a handful of matches since, missing the entire 2024 season aside from one loss he suffered in Stuttgart.

There have been a few false dawns on the Kyrgios comeback trail, but hopefully this US Open plan can mark the true return that allows him to enjoy a few solid years on tour before his retirement.
