Nicolas Jarry launches into rant at Wimbledon umpire for the ‘problem’ he had with Cam Norrie during their match

Nicolas Jarry has launched into a frustrated rant at the Wimbledon umpire today during his match against Cam Norrie.

Falling into a two-set-to-love deficit, the Chilean was rightly emotional, having been completely neutralised by his opponent.

And, whilst he has already overcome such a scoreline once before at this tournament, there have been few signs of such a comeback in the offing.

He channelled this frustration into Cam Norrie’s second serve, strangely enough, taking great issue with the number of bounces and thus the time taken between that and his first serve.

Jarry would tell the umpire exactly what he thought.

Whilst Norrie enjoyed a toilet break after winning the second set to extend his lead, Jarry was busy speaking to the umpire.

He argued: ’It’s your interpretation? But it can be changed. That doesn’t make it good.

‘I know, I know. But that’s not what I’m asking you. That is not the problem. That is not the problem. The problem is, is it normal to do that?

‘Do you have to interfere, or do I have to suck it?

‘It doesn’t matter the reason, it is the same as hitting the ball anywhere. It’s intentional, but you have to apply the code as well. So, how does that work?

‘He perfectly can stop doing it. It’s not something, a nervous tick. It’s something he can control.

‘You think there’s nothing that I can do and that I just have to suck it because he does it always? That is the only reason? That’s the reason for me to have to play with something that affects me. It can be changed! It’s not something that cannot be changed.

‘I don’t want to force you to do anything. I just want to do what the rule says. And if there’s not a rule, then tell me there’s not a rule and I cannot do anything about it.

‘Okay, so it has to be intentional, and if it’s not intentional there’s nothing else to do. If that’s the rule, I don’t need to do anything. It affects me.’

Norrie praised the Wimbledon crowd before this match, and they would have been loving to see his opponent so wound up.

Cam Norrie continues to thrive on grass

Even if Norrie were to throw away his hefty lead and somehow lose to Jarry, this would remain a hugely impressive week for the 29-year-old.

After all, he already impressed many with his win over Frances Tiafoe in just the second round, yet has since managed to maintain that form.

Now, he is just one step away from the quarter-finals, and would therefore be within one more win of matching his best-ever run at Wimbledon.

Norrie deserves so much credit for the way he has gone about this event, flying well under the radar to be the last Brit standing at the All-England Club.
