Opetaia wasted no time looking ahead after stopping Mikaelian, calling David Benavidez into the ring and asking: “What better fight to make? How exciting. Respectfully, let’s get it on.”
Benavidez was equally receptive. “Next year, let’s do it right here,” he said, with Opetaia immediately answering: “Done.”
Then came the sales pitch. “He’s a boogeyman of the division, but I’m the person they call when it’s time to kill the boogeyman,” Benavidez said. “He looks like he likes war. I’m the exact same way, so we’re going to give the fans a hell of a fight.”
Opetaia replied: “We live for these moments. Let’s go.”

Jai Opetaia has stopped Noel Mikaelian in the ninth round to retain his Ring and Zuffa cruiserweight titles. Opetaia had controlled much of the fight before unloading another dangerous sequence that prompted referee Harvey Dock to step in at 1min 30sec of the round. It was an emphatic finish against an opponent who had never previously been knocked down, let alone stopped.
Attention immediately turns to David Benavidez, who is watching eagerly from ringside. That’s one of the better fights that can be made in boxing today. And it seems like we’re about to hear something more about it …
Both main-event fighters arrived at T-Mobile Arena a couple of hours ago and are now in their respective dressing rooms making their final preparations. Garcia appears to have been keeping to himself for the most part, while Benn has had a couple of rather accomplished visitors stopping by: Teófimo López and Terence Crawford. A quick word on tonight’s order of play. Heavyweight prospect Da’Mazion Vanhouter has just stopped Raphael Akpejiori in the first round of the second-to-last undercard fight before tonight’s main event. The 21-year-old appeared to injure his left shoulder during an awkward tangle in which his arm was caught, leaving him in obvious discomfort. Somehow he fought on … and only seconds later flattened Akpejiori for the stoppage.
Next up is Jai Opetaia against Noel Mikaelian in a cruiserweight fight that nearly became a legal battle before either man stepped into the ring. Don King, the 95-year-old promoter who has Mikaelian under contract, filed a cease-and-desist in an attempt to block the bout, accusing Zuffa of interfering with his promotional agreement.
Dana White was unmoved, insisting the fight would go ahead despite King’s objections. “He’s fighting this weekend,” White said earlier this week, going on to describe boxing as “the most unsophisticated sport I have ever seen in my life”. (Heartbreaking, truly.)
Sure enough, Opetaia and Mikaelian are moments away from settling matters in the ring.

Hello and welcome to Las Vegas, where Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn will meet tonight for the WBC welterweight championship in a main event that offers a revealing snapshot of boxing in 2026.
Four years ago Benn’s career was thrown into limbo after two positive drug tests scuppered his blockbuster fight with Chris Eubank Jr. Two years ago Garcia was serving a one-year suspension after testing positive for ostarine around his career-best victory over Devin Haney, a result subsequently overturned to a no-contest. Tonight they will each collect an eight-figure payday beneath the lights of T-Mobile Arena, with reports putting the combined purse at around $30m. Few sports are better at turning yesterday’s scandal into tomorrow’s main event.
There is, beneath all the uncomfortable baggage, an intriguing fight. Garcia, 28, is making the first defense of the title he won by dropping and outpointing Mario Barrios in February, completing a remarkable turnaround after his return from suspension had ended in a flat defeat by Rolando Romero. Benn, 29, enters his first world title fight with the chance to follow his father Nigel, who held the WBC super-middleweight championship more than three decades ago.
And he arrives as a considerable underdog. Benn’s natural instinct is to come forward and make fights uncomfortable, promising this week to bring “tenacity, ferocity, spite” from the opening bell. The problem is that Garcia, for all his well-documented flaws, possesses exceptional hand speed and a vicious left hook tailor-made to punish exactly that sort of aggression. Benn’s most plausible route to an upset may therefore require him to walk directly toward Garcia’s best weapon.
Then there is the weight. Benn had not made 147lb in more than four years and described getting there as going through the “pits of hell”. Yet he came in at 146lb on Friday, his lightest in seven years, while Garcia weighed 145.5lb.
“No one’s given me a chance,” Benn said this week. “The pressure’s on Ryan completely.”
The talking, tweeting, typing and streaming are nearly over. Garcia has the belt. Benn has the famous name, the family history and very little to lose. The fighters should be making their entrances roughly an hour from now.
