Afghanistan secured a historic victory over England in Lahore, eliminating the reigning champions from the Champions Trophy. Azmatullah Omarzai’s all-round brilliance and Ibrahim Zadran’s record-breaking century were pivotal in Afghanistan’s stunning 8-run win.

Ibrahim Zadran’s magnificent 177 off 146 balls, the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history and for Afghanistan in ODIs, propelled Afghanistan to a formidable total. His innings provided the foundation for their victory. Azmatullah Omarzai delivered a stellar all-round performance, contributing a crucial 41 runs and taking five wickets, including the decisive final dismissal of Adil Rashid. His contribution proved vital in Afghanistan’s defense of 326.

Joe Root’s determined century kept England’s hopes alive, but ultimately fell short. His 99-run knock was a masterclass in resilience, but England’s batting lineup couldn’t overcome Afghanistan’s spirited bowling attack. England’s loss marks their second consecutive defeat to Afghanistan in ICC ODI events, following their 2023 World Cup upset. This early exit from the Champions Trophy underscores England’s recent struggles in major tournaments. (READ MORE)
