Ellyse Perry did not last long. She was dismissed for two, caught and bowled by Sophie Ecclestone.

Her average has now dipped from 61.86 to 58.13 as a result of playing what appears to be an unnecessary innings while injured, perhaps a sign of how the media and supporters care more about stats than the players themselves.

Australia are all out for 440, a lead of 270.

Ecclestone completes a deserved five-wicket haul after bowling well for little reward yesterday.

The England spinner will have her name on the honour board recognising Test hauls of five wickets or more by visiting players.

Her 5-143 will sit directly beneath India pace ace Jasprit Bumrah, who claimed 5-57 in last year’s Boxing Day Test.

The first entry on that board is England’s Alfred Shaw, who bowled the first ball in Test cricket and took 5-38 in the maiden match, back in 1877.
