Why Katie Boulter could be Britain’s best chance at Wimbledon glory

Katie Boulter beat ninth seed Paula Badosa in the first round

Katie Boulter secured the fourth top 10 victory of her career when she took on Paula Badosa to open her Wimbledon campaign.

The Brit started strong and comfortably took the opening set, before the Spaniard showed her resolve and battled back to send the match into a decider.

Boulter claimed a decisive break of serve at 5-4 before going on to win 6-2 3-6 6-4 to the delight of the home crowd.

Boulter’s victory has opened up the Wimbledon draw with ninth seed Badosa now out of the tournament. Boulter faces qualifier Solana Sierra in round two and she has a good chance to at least reach the second week.

Katie Boulter could face Madison Keys who struggled in round one

Should Boulter reach the fourth round, she could face the hard-hitting Madison Keys, who beat the 28-year-old at the French Open.

The American has progressed as far as the semi-finals at SW19 in previous years and she has a playing style ideal for the grass.

They can meet one another in round four. However, the Australian Open champion endured a difficult start to the tournament by coming from behind to beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse in three tough sets.

If Keys continues to struggle through the tournament and Boulter keeps gaining confidence, she may fancy her chances of reaching her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Katie Boulter could go further than ATP British number one Jack Draper

Another British player with a chance of success at Wimbledon is the men’s world number four Jack Draper.

He has improved exponentially over the past year and has proved he can go far in Grand Slams after reaching the US Open semi-finals in 2024.

Though he will avoid facing Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner until the semi-finals, Draper’s path to Wimbledon glory is a difficult one.

He could face Halle Open winner Alexander Bublik, a dangerous and unpredictable opponent who defeated him at the French Open.

Should Draper lose and with Boulter’s draw opening up after beating Badosa, she has every chance to be the last British player standing fin the entire Wimbledon draw.
