Ayush Mhatre is fast becoming the next all-format batting sensation to emerge from the Mumbai stables. The 18-year-old affirmed the same on Friday in Lucknow when he broke Rohit Sharma’s world record with an unbeaten century in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Chasing a 193-run target against Vidarbha at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium B in Lucknow, Mhatre unfurled carnage with eight fours and as many sixes to steer his side home by seven wickets and 13 balls to spare.

The right-hander was only featuring in his 9th senior-level T20 match after having made his debut in the format in the IPL 2025 season earlier this year for the Chennai Super Kings. Earlier in October, the batting prodigy was retained by the five-time champions ahead of the impending IPL 2026 auction in December.
Mhatre’s expanding range and maturity have been noted quite early, as he is likely to lead India at the upcoming U-19 World Cup in January 2026. That he broke Mumbai legend Rohit Sharma’s all-format century record, aged 18 years and 135 days in Lucknow on Friday, is a testament to his improving capabilities.
Mhatre surpassed Rohit, who had scored a First-Class, List A and T20 century by the age of 19 years and 339 days. Rohit had completed the set when he scored the first T20 hundred by an Indian batter in early 2007 for Mumbai.

Using Prithvi Shaw’s bat for maiden Ranji ton
Last year, a 17-year-old Mhatre made headlines when he racked up his maiden Ranji Trophy century with a bat gifted by another Mumbai batting prodigy, Prithvi Shaw. “I had asked for his bat and he gave it to me. I scored a hundred with it today. I have known Prithvi for a long time as he too hails from Virar,” Mhatre had said.
Mhatre’s story mirrors that of Shaw, his opening partner in this match. He would wake up daily at 4:15 am, catch the 5 am train from Virar, 46 kilometres from Mumbai downtown, to reach the famous Oval maidan for practice sessions.

In January 2025, Mhatre broke the List A world record as the youngest-ever centurion in the format, aged 17 years and 168 days when he scored a whopping 181 against Nagaland.
Mhatre to lead India in U19 Asia Cup
Mhatre will be leading India Under-19 at the ACC Men’s Under-19 Asia Cup in Dubai from December 12.
The BCCI announced a 15-member squad for the continental event, with the side also including aggressive opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Vihaan Malhotra will be Mhatre’s deputy at the competition. India are in Group A with Pakistan and two qualifying teams while Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and another qualifier make Group B.
