The 19-year-old Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba was the hero as Aston Villa came from two goals down to beat Red Bull Salzburg 3-2 at Villa Park, though they lost Ollie Watkins to injury in the first half.
Jimoh-Aloba hit the winner with three minutes remaining, tucking Kadan Young’s low cross into the corner to cap a fightback that looked unlikely after a limp showing for an hour.
Unai Emery, whose team had already qualified, made six changes from the side that beat Newcastle on Sunday, including giving Harvey Elliott a start, but retained Watkins.
Salzburg were the better side in the first half and were ahead on 33 minutes after Tyrone Mings gave the ball away and Edmund Baidoo’s cross was diverted over the line by Karim Konaté despite Victor Lindelöf’s best efforts to keep it out.
More worryingly for Villa, Watkins went off on 35 minutes, clutching his hamstring, with Morgan Rogers replacing him. “He felt something, but not a lot,” Emery said. “We will test him. I don’t know if he will be available for Sunday.”
Salzburg doubled their lead four minutes after the break when Kerim Alajbegovic jinked to the byline and crossed for Moussa Yeo to score at the near post with a classy flick.
Rogers cut the deficit with a neat finish at the near-post after combining smartly with Emi Buendía. Mings then atoned for his earlier error, heading Villa level from Matty Cash’s cross before Jimoh-Aloba had the final say, ensuring his side finished second in the 36-team table.
Rangers’ poor campaign ended with a comprehensive defeat at Porto, who secured a place in the last 16 with a 3-1 win.
Danny Röhl’s side were ahead after six minutes, Djeidi Gassama looping a header into the opposite corner of the net from a right-wing cross by Findlay Curtis.
But Porto were level in the 27th minute through Rodrigo Mora, who finished a move he had started by firing past Jack Butland from close range. Within eight minutes, the hosts were ahead after a farcical mix-up between Butland and James Tavernier from a long-ball, which ran into the path of Francisco Moura who back-heeled home.
It was soon 3-1 when Rangers’ Emmanuel Fernandez headed past his own keeper from a Porto corner at the near post.
Röhl said: “It’s still not good enough but to be on the front foot, try something in possession, counter-pressing … I’m so proud of the development.”
Lyon secured top spot after a 4-2 triumph at home to PAOK and Midtjylland moved up to third after they defeated Dinamo Zagreb 2-0.
A 2-1 win for Real Betis over Feyenoord secured them home advantage in the second leg of their last-16 tie, with Freiburg’s narrow loss at Lille dropping them to seventh.
Braga and Roma completed the top eight after draws on the road at Go Ahead Eagles and Panathinaikos respectively.
Young Boys’ 3-2 loss at Stuttgart meant they missed out on the playoffs at the expense of Ludogorets, who defeated Nice 1-0 to sneak in.
Brann finished in 24th position despite going down 1-0 at Sturm Graz.
Elsewhere, Maccabi Tel Aviv finished bottom of the group after a 3-0 home defeat by Bologna and Malmö also ended winless following a 2-1 loss at Genk.
Red Star Belgrade drew 1-1 with Celta Vigo, which was also the score between FCSB and Fenerbahce, while Viktoria Plzen won 1-0 at Basel.
