Annabel Croft reveals the WTA player she is picking to win the US Open over Aryna Sabalenka

The final Grand Slam of the year is right around the corner.

The US Open, taking place amidst the hustle and bustle of New York City, will commence from August 24 and run until September 7.

Last year’s singles champions, Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner, are set to return to defend their titles. Some players are looking to break through and win their first major title, while others, such as Novak Djokovic, are looking to wade into uncharted territory among the greats.

Another former professional player, Annabel Croft, has weighed in on the chances of another name snatching the US Open crown away from world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Former world number 24 and British number one Annabel Croft was working during Sky Sports’ Cincinnati Open coverage on Monday evening when the discussion turned to the US Open.

Croft, who won the Australian Open and Wimbledon junior singles tournaments in 1984, has picked Iga Swiatek to lift her second US Open title.

Croft said: “I’m actually going with Swiatek actually, just after the way she won Wimbledon.

“I think it’s given her a big boost again and she’s back.”

The Pole won her second Grand Slam title at the 2022 US Open, defeating Ons Jabeur 6-2 7-6 in the final.

Swiatek has gone on to add a further four major titles to her collection, most recently at Wimbledon.

Swiatek faces Sorana Cirstea in the Cincinnati Open fourth round

After defeating Anastasia Potapova in the Cincinnati Open second round, Iga Swiatek was set to face Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk in the third round.

However, Kostyuk has withdrawn from the tournament, allowing Swiatek to advance to the fourth round without stepping onto court.

Swiatek and Cirstea have played each other four times on the WTA Tour, with the Pole emerging the victor on all four occasions.

The Romanian star has been in good form in Midwest America, defeating 22nd seed Magdalena Frech on her way to the fourth round.
