British qualifier ranked 719th in the world reveals if he wants to go professional after reaching Wimbledon second round

Oliver Tarvet has already staked a pretty solid claim to be Wimbledon’s outstanding fairytale story, as the lowest-ranked player in the competition.

Just to have made it into the event is a success in itself, battling through the qualifiers for his spot in the main draw.

But, the 21-year-old was clearly not finished there, and proved as much by beating Leandro Riedi in a comprehensive three-set victory.

Now in the second round and due to face the two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, his life is set to change.

It’ll be interesting to see whether he makes the necessary tweaks to allow his career to grow with it.

Chatting on BBC 5 Live after his fairytale run continued, he looked ahead to the bright future that surely waits for him now after these past few weeks.

And, asked if professional tennis beckoned, he remained clear but shaky on his reasoning.

Tarvet claimed: ‘Yeah, I mean, obviously, it’s very special. Just trying to make the most of it and trying to enjoy the moment when I can. And, yeah, just, you know, it’s been really special.

‘I dreamt of this as a kid, and, you know, I came here, you know, when I was ever since I was like, nine, ten years old and, you know, to be playing in main draw, you know, come through qualifying and then playing in my first round today and win, and then have a chance to play either, you know, Fognini or Alcaraz is just really special, I’m just trying to make the most of it.

‘I mean, we’ll see, you know, I think just take it day by day and, you know, see where that takes me, but, yeah, it’s a massive goal of mind to come back in January and to finish my last spring semester as a Torero.

‘So obviously, as I said, it’s something that’s very important to me, and you know, I’m gonna do everything that I can to, you know, keep eligible with the prize money and everything.

‘So, yeah, we’ll see how things progress, but for now, you know, nothing’s changed and I want to go back to University of San Diego in January.’

Who is British talent Oliver Tarvet?

As one of many lesser-known Brits in the Wimbledon main draw, he did not need a wildcard to get him to this stage.

He is there on his own merit, and continues to prove his worth with incredible serving and rock-solid groundstrokes.

Just 21 years old, the St Albans-born tennis star is currently a student at the University of San Diego. However, this win at Wimbledon marks the very first of his career on the ATP Tour.

The hope is that it is the first of many, but it remains to be seen whether he will take the professional plunge sooner rather than later to start racking up more tour-level victories.

After all, Tarvet has already soared up the rankings with just this one win.
