Dylan Larkin trade update: The NHL trade market may have just gained its biggest available center, and one team is already being linked as a perfect destination. According to The Hockey News writer Michael DeRosa, the Boston Bruins should aggressively pursue Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin following reports that the veteran center has requested a trade.
Boston’s long-standing search for a true first-line center could make the Bruins one of the most intriguing fits if Larkin ultimately leaves Detroit.
Surprise trade request shocks NHL circles
The development surfaced after Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported that Larkin wants a fresh start away from the Red Wings.
“Second, Larkin’s involvement in the trade market is massive,” Friedman wrote. “He has a full no-trade clause both this season and next, so his control over the situation does not change July 1. He’s a top-line center in a league desperate for centers, so there’s going to be a ton of interest. His play at the 4 Nations and Olympics was stellar. That’s going to excite potential trade partners.”
Why does Larkin reportedly want out?
While neither Larkin nor the organization has publicly detailed the situation, Friedman pointed to multiple factors that may have contributed to the reported request.
“Because no one will talk, we can only guess at the rationale, but there appear to be two critical factors: Detroit’s inability to make the playoffs, and a somewhat frosty relationship between the captain and the team’s top hockey executive,” Friedman writes, referring to Steve Yzerman. “This is also another sign of how the league is changing.”
Detroit’s ongoing playoff struggles have become increasingly difficult to ignore. The Red Wings now hold the NHL’s longest active postseason drought after Buffalo ended its own playoff absence.
The disappointment was magnified this season after Detroit appeared positioned to secure a playoff berth before the trade deadline, only to suffer another late collapse despite adding veteran defenseman Justin Faulk.
Why Boston makes sense
If Larkin becomes available, Boston’s need at center could make the franchise one of the most aggressive bidders.
The Bruins have lacked a long-term solution at the top of their lineup since significant roster changes in recent seasons. Larkin would immediately address that issue while bringing proven offensive production and leadership experience.
The 29-year-old remains under contract through the 2030-31 season with an $8.7 million cap hit, providing long-term cost certainty for any acquiring team.
Consistency remains Larkin’s biggest asset
Despite Detroit’s team struggles, Larkin continues to produce at a high level.
He finished the most recent season with 34 goals and 67 points in 74 games, extending a remarkably consistent stretch of offensive production. It marked the fifth consecutive year he recorded at least 30 goals and 67 points.
Full control remains in Larkin’s hands
Any potential deal will require Larkin’s approval.
The veteran center owns a full no-movement clause, allowing him to effectively determine where he is willing to continue his career. Friedman did not identify specific destinations beyond noting that interest around the NHL is expected to be substantial.
