Emma Raducanu says there’s a ‘stereotype’ about British tennis players that just isn’t true after her French Open exit

Emma Raducanu says there’s a ‘stereotype’ about British tennis players that just isn’t true after her French Open exit

Emma Raducanu suffered another heavy Grand Slam defeat at the hands of Iga Swiatek at the French Open.

Raducanu was hoping to cause problems for Swiatek, who was coming into the French Open this year more vulnerable than ever before.

Despite this, the four-time French Open champion did not show those vulnerabilities and was ruthless in her straight sets victory over Raducanu.

After an overall positive clay court season for Raducanu, she will now head home to switch her attention to grass.

Emma Raducanu says there’s a stereotype about British players that just isn’t true

A lot of the grass court tournaments leading up to Wimbledon are held in the United Kingdom, with British players like Raducanu able to use the home support.

In her post-match press conference in Paris, Raducanu was asked about the grass court season and whether she felt more comfortable on the surface.

While the world number 41 admittedly enjoys the grass court season, Raducanu believes there is a misconception about British players on the surface.

“Yeah, I think it’s quite interesting the stereotype in terms of like Brits don’t really train on grass like all year round, but we train on grass as much as anyone else does for the season,” said Raducanu.

“But, I do feel comfortable obviously being at home and having that environment around me…Last year I had a great season and I’m looking forward to being in the same environment, being at home, having the home support and yeah I think all of us really thrive in that environment and it’s just a really healthy and kind of happy time.”

What is Emma Raducanu’s schedule for the grass court season?

Raducanu is now set for a busy grass court season, as she builds-up to her home Grand Slam tournament at Wimbledon.

This includes making her debut at two grass court tournaments, including the WTA’s return to Queen’s.

While she has spoken about enjoying playing at home, Raducanu will not remain in the U.K. for the entirety of the grass court season after receiving a wildcard for the WTA 500 tournament in Berlin.

Raducanu may also have her eyes on becoming seeded for Wimbledon this year, and is 262 ranking points behind the player ranked at world number 32.

However, Raducanu will need to make deep runs at her opening two grass court tournaments if she is to bridge that gap.
