Emma Raducanu’s coach has a theory why Iga Swiatek has been able to re-find her form at the French Open

Iga Swiatek continued her French Open winning streak after beating Emma Raducanu in straight sets.

Swiatek made Grand Slam history after her emphatic victory over the 2021 US Open champion.

This has not always been the case for the five-time major winner in recent weeks, with Swiatek appearing vulnerable after some of her recent losses.

Despite this, Raducanu’s coach Mark Petchey has explained why he thinks Swiatek has appeared to re-find her previous form in Paris.

Mark Petchey has a theory over why Iga Swiatek has been able to re-find form at the French Open

Swiatek beat Raducanu, 6-1, 6-2, to progress to the third round of the French Open this year.

The Pole has not reached a single final since winning the French Open last year, but Petchey believes that being in Paris has brought the best out of Swiatek, also admitting that she is ‘head and shoulders’ above Raducanu.

“I mean obviously because of the expectation around the way that Iga has performed so far coming into Roland Garros, everyone feeling like this is going to be obviously a match that hopefully Emma could stay close with her,” Petchey said on TNT Sports.

“But, I don’t know how much people have watched of Iga’s losses in those previous tournaments coming in here there was some lights out performances from Danielle Collins, particularly in Rome and I think you have to keep that in context.

“Mats [Wilander] will know this better than anyone else having won here, you come here and you feel good about it. The court is a very different clay court than anywhere else that these players play in, you have a different ball and Iga, yeah at this stage in where they’re at in their respective careers was head and shoulders above Emma today.”

Iga Swiatek’s 23 consecutive wins at the French Open

Swiatek is a four-time French Open champion, and has now won 23 consecutive matches at the clay court major.

Only three of these 23 matches were not straight set wins for Swiatek, with Naomi Osaka coming the closest to beating her in the second round last year after having a match point.

The last player to beat Swiatek at the French Open is Maria Sakkari, who beat her in the 2021 quarter-finals.
