European football: Kane misses penalty as Dortmund share spoils in Der Klassiker

The Ballon d’Or winner Harry Kane missed a penalty and hit the post for Bayern Munich as Borussia Dortmund snatched a last-gasp equaliser through Fabio Silva for a 2-2 draw in Der Klassiker on Saturday that kept the teams level on points at the top.

Kane, who collected his prize in a ceremony in London on Monday, was an unused substitute in the 6-1 German Cup second-round demolition of Magdeburg on Wednesday but returned to the starting lineup on Saturday, missing from the spot with Bayern 1-0 up. He also hit the post, one of four ‌times Bayern struck ‌the woodwork.

Silva snatched the equaliser in the 89th minute to leave both ‌teams on 18 points, with Bayern top on goal difference.

In a rollercoaster first half Bayern hit the post through Michael Olise and Ismael Saibari missed a golden chance before the visitors had a goal ruled out by VAR.

Bayern, ‌also hit by injuries to Serge Gnabry and Olise, struck in the 38th minute thanks to Konrad Laimer’s goal on the rebound, after his first effort was blocked by Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel.

With the Bayern head coach, Vincent Kompany, recovering after his collapse last week, Bayern’s full-back Laimer was more threatening than Kane, who sent his 56th minute spot-kick against the crossbar.

Dortmund scored through Serhou Guirassy on the hour but parity lasted only six minutes as Dayot Upamecano tapped in from a Kane assist from close ‌range.

Kane’s low shot bounced off the post before Silva scored the equaliser. Bayern’s Lennart Karl still had time to see his shot in stoppage time bounce off the crossbar and cap a frustrating day for the champions.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, last season’s Europa League finalist Freiburg beat Augsburg 2-1 thanks to Cyriaque Irie’s 85th-minute goal to stay third. RB Leipzig are close behind in fourth after beating Schalke 2-0. The league top scorer, Niclas Füllkrug, added his ninth goal as Werder Bremen beat Hoffenheim 2-0 to move up to fifth.

Bayer Leverkusen’s strong early form hit another setback in a 4-2 loss at home to Stuttgart for back-to-back defeats. Borussia Mönchengladbach and Paderborn drew 0-0.

Atlético Madrid went to the top of La Liga – for a few hours, at least – after beating Levante 2-0.

The left-back Alejandro Grimaldo seized on uncertainty in the Levante defence to get Atlético started in the 36th minute, then Giuliano Simeone finished off an incisive team move for the second.

Atlético went one point ahead of Barcelona in the table but Barça can take top spot back later on Saturday if they avoid defeat against Alavés.
