Four British players lose in the first round of French Open qualifying but two make it through

French Open qualifying is well underway, with British players suffering differing fates on the Parisian clay.

Six Brits automatically gained direct entry into the main draw of Roland Garros, in the forms of Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, Cameron Norrie, Jacob Fearnley and Sonay Kartal.

It has been an impressive clay court season for Draper, who became a top five player after reaching the Madrid Open final and the Italian Open quarter-finals.

There have also been some positive signs for Raducanu, who recently beat Daria Kasatkina after taking a wildcard into the WTA 500 tournament in Strasbourg.

Although she had been struggling on the main tour, Katie Boulter was rewarded with a title in Paris after dropping down to WTA 125 level.

While these Brits have already guaranteed their place in the Roland Garros main draw, six others have been trying to come through qualifying.

The first round of Roland Garros qualifying has taken place over the last couple of days, with Dan Evans, Billy Harris, Jan Choinski, Harriet Dart, Heather Watson and Fran Jones all attempting to reach the main draw.

It had already been confirmed that only five of these Brits would advance to the second round, with Evans and Harris drawn to play each other.

Harris is on the cusp of reaching the top 100 on the ATP Tour, while Evans has fallen outside of the top 200 after continued poor form.

Despite this, it was veteran Evans that beat his compatriot Harris, 7-5 6-3, to get an all-important win and progress to the second round.

Choinski was the only other British man involved in French Open qualifying, but suffered a straight sets defeat to Italian Giulio Zeppieri.

There was only one British woman to come through the first round as well, with Fran Jones continuing her impressive form after beating Croatian Lea Boskovic.

Jones is currently on a six-match winning streak, and has already won two ITF titles on clay this year to reach a career-high ranking of world number 113.

However, Watson and Dart were unable to follow suit, with both players losing their respective first round matches in straight sets.

Dart was involved in controversy last month, and is now on a seven match losing streak after her, 6-1 6-2, defeat to Anastasiia Sobolieva.

Who is the last British player to come through qualifying at the French Open?

Roland Garros qualifying has not been a happy hunting ground for British players in recent years, with it being five years since a player has advanced to the main draw.

That player was Liam Broady, who beat Nicola Kuhn, Botic van de Zandschulp and Marc Polmans to reach his first and only Roland Garros main draw to date in 2020.

Broady is not anywhere near qualifying this year, after injuries and struggles for form mean that he is now ranked at world number 624.

The closest player to qualifying last year was the aforementioned Harris, who reached the third round before losing to Valentin Vacherot.

This year British hopes in qualifying now rest on Evans and Jones, who will now play Clement Tabur and Mai Hontama, respectively, in an attempt to reach the third round of qualifying.
