How every British player performed on day one at Wimbledon as world number 719 completes big upset

It has been a sensational day for British tennis here at Wimbledon, with no fewer than seven men and women making it through round one.

There were returns to the All-England Club for the likes of Emma Raducanu, Katie Boulter, Jacob Fearnley and Cam Norrie, whilst youngsters like Mika Stojsavljevic, Oliver Tarvet and Hannah Klugman all enjoyed Grand Slam debuts.

And even though there was a wide array of opponents for the Brits to face, far more made it into the second round than did not.

Here’s how every single British star got on the opening day, Monday the 30th of June.

It was Oliver Tarvet who got the men underway with the first win of the day, as he beat Leandro Riedi in a comfortable three-set affair.

A brilliant continuation of his fairytale run, this 21-year-old made it all the way through qualifiers and is ranked 719th in the world, the lowest in the entire main draw.

That has not stopped him from setting up a round-two clash with Carlos Alcaraz, with Tarvet rising over 300 places in the world rankings with his win.

Cam Norrie got a good win over the in-form Roberto Bautista Agut, whilst Billy Harris easily beat lucky loser Dušan Lajović too.

And, in one of the shocks of the event thus far, Arthur Fery beat the 20th seed Alexei Popyrin, as another low-ranked Brit emerged for the big occasion.

Elsewhere, Jacob Fearnley was well beaten by an inspired Joao Fonseca on his Wimbledon debut, whilst Henry Searle lost to Ethan Quinn.

Sonay Kartal was the very first win that any British player managed to get, as she shocked the world with her win over Jelena Ostapenko.

And whilst one had to go, it was Emma Raducanu, the British number one, who came out on top on Court 1 against 17-year-old compatriot Mimi Xu.

It was Katie Boulter who provided the biggest scalp of the day though, defeating the world number nine Paula Badosa in a battling three-set win.

The Spaniard was entering the tournament nursing some physical issues, but she was powerless against the aggressive, controlled 28-year-old, who deservedly snatched the victory.

However, sadly, that is as good as it got for the Brits, with Hannah Klugman, Harriet Dart and Mika Stojsavljevic all losing.
