How Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood’s Sui Gas Pipeline team could not chase target of 40

Pakistan Test captain Shan Masood was turning out for Sui National Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) team in the four-day President’s Trophy against the Pakistan Television (PTV) team, and needing to chase a paltry target of 40. However, the Karachi venue saw a two-century-plus-years-old record (the smallest target defended in first class cricket) broken when Masood’s side were dismissed for 37 losing the match by 2 wickets.

PTV had successfully defended 39 at the National Stadium, as Masood was dismissed for a duck.

PTV bettered the last record held by Oldfield who successfully defended 41 against MCC in 1794 at the Oval, winning by six runs.

SNGPL saw three batsmen dismissed by ducks including the national captain Massood. For PTV, left arm spinner Ali Usman claimed 6-9, while fast bowler Amad Butt took 4-28.

It was a dramatic day, after SNGPL had in fact taken a 72-run lead in the first innings scoring 238, after PTV registered 166. PTV were then skittled out for 111. But SNGPL didn’t see it coming, when PTV bowled Ali Usman and Amad Butt unchanged, and the two secured the win inside 20 overs, needing just 19.4 overs to record a dramatic win. Saifullah Bangash was top scorer with 14 runs while no other batter reached double figures.

Just a fortnight ago, Masood had scored a record making fastest first class double century in a 177 ball 200.

The 8-team tournament will see finals played in February between top two finishers. PTV are currently on second place, while SNGPL have now dropped down to third.
