Meet the Canadian star looking to avenge ‘incredibly hard’ Wimbledon defeat to Taylor Fritz at the Canadian Open

Taylor Fritz has been handed a tough rematch at the Canadian Open.

The world number four, who was shocked by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the Washington Open quarter-finals, is one of the favourites to win the week’s Canadian Open.

The American came through a tough contest against Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round, winning 7-5 7-6.

However, Fritz now faces a young Canadian star, who was defeated by the American in an almighty tussle at Wimbledon.

Here is everything you need to know about young Canadian prodigy Gabriel Diallo, who recently played Ben Shelton at the Washington Open.

Meet Gabriel Diallo

Taylor Fritz’s next opponent in Canada is Gabriel Diallo, a 23-year-old Canadian prodigy who pushed the American to five sets in the Wimbledon second round.

The Canadian, who was born in Montreal, first made his ATP qualifying debut at the 2022 Canadian Open in Montreal, defeating James Duckworth in the first round. At 20 years old he became the youngest Canadian winner of a Challenger Tour title, after winning in Granby.

In September 2023, he stunned world number 18 Lorenzo Musetti; helping Canada to defeat Italy in the Davis Cup.

The Canadian qualified for his first Grand Slam at the 2024 French Open, before recording his first Grand Slam main draw victories at the 2024 US Open, beating Jaume Munar and Arthur Fils. He reached his first ATP Tour final in October 2024 at the Almaty Open, losing to Karen Khachanov in the final.

In March 2025, Diallo reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open, defeating the likes of Cameron Norrie and Grigor Dimitrov. Diallo then defeated 18th seed Francisco Cerundolo in the French Open first round.

The 22-year-old won his first major title in June, the Libema Open. He then went on to reach the second round of Wimbledon, before being defeated by Taylor Fritz in five sets.

In his post-match press conference, Fritz described the match as ‘incredibly hard.’

He said: “That’s an incredibly hard match. In the four sets I’ve lost [first and second round], I really don’t think there’s much I did wrong at all.

“And I kind of felt like that’s the way the match was going. I was going to have to play near-perfect when I got my opportunities. Really happy to get through.”

Who could Fritz or Diallo play in the Canadian Open fourth round?

An interesting name will await either Taylor Fritz or Gabriel Diallo in the Canadian Open fourth round.

They could face 19th seed Jiri Lehecka, who defeated Jack Draper on his way to the the Queen’s Club Championship final in June.

Or they could match-up against Frenchman Arthur Fils, who had been suffering with a back injury since the French Open before his return in Canada.

Fils defeated former Canadian Open champion Pablo Carreno Busta, while Lehecka defeated Mackenzie McDonald.
