Emma Raducanu’s impressive spell of form has continued at the Canadian Open.
The British star has enjoyed a period of greater consistency on the WTA Tour since hiring Mark Petchey in March, and this looks set to continue.
In her first round match at the Canadian Open, Raducanu rarely looked troubled as she defeated Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-2 6-4.
Raducanu was launched into the spotlight after her US Open victory in 2021, and has struggled to maintain consistent form since.

However, this appears to have changed over the last few months, evidenced by an impressive showing at Wimbledon and her semi-final run at the Washington Open.
Following her victory over Ruse, it was revealed that Raducanu had entered a conversation with former British number one Johanna Konta.
Emma Raducanu reaches new WTA 1000 landmark
As per OptaAce, only Johanna Konta in 2016 has won more WTA-1000 main draw matches in a single entire season than Emma Raducanu in 2025 among British players since the format’s introduction in 2009.
In 2016 Johanna Konta won 19 WTA-1000 main draw matches. In 2025, Emma Raducanu has won 10 so far.
The Brit won her first WTA-1000 match of 2025 at the Dubai Tennis Championships, defeating Maria Sakkari 6-4 6-2.
Raducanu won her next four WTA-1000 matches at the Miami Open, where she beat the likes of Amanda Anisimova and Emma Navarro to reach the quarter-finals.
She then won one match at the Madrid Open against Suzanne Lamens, before winning a further three contests at the Italian Open.
Raducanu faces Peyton Stearns in the second round of the Canadian Open. Stearns, the 32nd seed, recently lost to Venus Williams at the Washington Open.
Anne Keothavong says Emma Raducanu should feel ‘proud’ of her performance
Speaking to Sky Sports after the victory, British Billie Jean Cup Captain Anne Keothavong, discussed Raducanu’s performance against Ruse.
Keothavong said: “That is a performance she should feel proud of. Tidy tennis. She played still very much within herself.

“I do feel she has a few more gears to go if needed but she is through to the second round.”
If Raducanu does defeat Stearns, she could face Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova, or the player who beat her in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2024: Lulu Sun.
