IND vs ENG Leeds Test: Jaiswal’s record-breaking spree, captain Gill’s England initiation, Pant tops sixes count – key stats from Day 1

India vs England 2025: India’s start to a new-era under the leadership of Shubman Gill could not have received a better start than batting first in unusually warm English conditions at the Headingley grounds in Leeds on Friday.

Ben Stokes’ England were pressed to the backfoot as the India top-order led by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Gill made merry in largely non-threatening conditions after being put into bat by the hosts. Finishing the day on 359 for three in 85 overs, India made their intentions clear on wanting to bat big and perhaps only once on a flatbed Headingley pitch. A heap of records tumbled as Jaiswal and Gill coasted to centuries.

Here’s a recap of the all major records broken on Day 1 of the India vs England Leeds Test:

Captain Shubman Gill’s record-breaking start

Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian man (33rd overall) to record a century on Test captaincy debut after Vijay Hazare (164* v ENG, 1951), Sunil Gavaskar (116 v NZ, ’76), Dilip Vengsarkar (102 v WI, ’87) and Virat Kohli (115 & 141 v AUS, 2015).

  • The century is Gill’s first hundred outside Asia in 28 innings. Gill is also the third Indian captain after Mohammad Azharuddin (1990) and Kohli (2018) to record a century in their first innings as captains in England.
  • Aged 25y 285d, Gill is the third youngest captain to record a Test century for India after Tendulkar (23y 253d) and Kapil Dev (25y 64d).

Jaiswal’s flawless England initiation

1 – Yashasvi Jaiswal became the first visiting man in history to record centuries in his first Test innings in Australia (161, Perth 2024) and England. The left-hander is only the fifth Indian to record a century in his first innings in England after Vijay Manjrekar (1952), Sandeep Patil (1982), Sourav Ganguly (1996) and Murali Vijay (2014).

5 – No batter has scored more Test hundreds for Jaiswal since his Test debut in 2023. Only Rohit Sharma (9) and Gill (6) have registered more centuries than Jaiswal in the World Test Championship for India.

4 – Jaiswal has now scored centuries in four different countries within his first 20 Tests. Only Sachin Tendulkar had recorded centuries in more countries (5) at the age of 23.

3 – The century marked Jaiswal’s third overseas hundred in 18 innings since debut. Only Tendulkar (7) and Sunil Gavaskar (4) have recorded more away Test tons aged 23.
